Check your own facts

Carriers are not the only source of truth about what you are buying. These two are independent of us and of any provider, and both have been online long enough to be worth bookmarking.

• 1SpeedGuide.net Long-running technical reference on broadband access, connection tuning, and throughput testing. Useful when you want to verify what a circuit is actually delivering rather than what the order confirmation says.
• 2Columbia University: technical resources on Internet service An academic index of ISP and access-technology material, maintained outside the industry and free of any commercial interest in what you buy.

What each service should cost

If you are working a quote right now, these are the pages that cover what moves the rate on each service and where the negotiating room usually sits.
